Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of terms

By accessing or using the doc2jats service (the "Service"), including the API, the OJS plugin, or any related tools, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

The Service is operated by Paideia Publishing Services LLC, a Delaware limited liability company ("Paideia", "we", "us").

2. Description of the service

doc2jats provides automated conversion of DOCX documents to JATS XML format, intended for academic publishing workflows. The Service includes a REST API, an OJS plugin for editorial workflow integration, and a 4-step guided markup wizard.

The Service is powered by open-source pipeline technology (originally developed by EDITUM / Universidad de Murcia) operated and hosted by Paideia Publishing Services LLC.

3. No warranty — service provided "as is"

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranty of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that:

• The conversion output (JATS XML) will be error-free, complete, or faithful to the original document in all cases.
• The Service will be uninterrupted, timely, or available at all times.
• The output will meet the requirements of any specific indexing service, journal, or publisher.
• The bibliographic references, citations, figures, or tables will be correctly identified or structured in all documents.

You are solely responsible for reviewing and validating all XML output before publication or submission to any indexing service.

4. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Paideia Publishing Services LLC shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to:

• Loss of data, documents, or conversion results.
• Errors or inaccuracies in the generated XML.
• Rejection of documents by indexing services (SciELO, PubMed, etc.) due to XML quality issues.
• Service interruptions or data loss due to infrastructure failures.
• Any damage resulting from unauthorized access to or alteration of your transmissions or data.

Our total liability to you for any claims arising out of the use of the Service shall not exceed the amount paid by you for the Service in the three (3) months preceding the claim.

5. Credits and payments

Access to the Service requires the purchase of conversion credits. Credits are consumed per successful conversion request.

• Credits are non-refundable once purchased, except where required by applicable law.
• Credits do not expire, unless the account is terminated due to a violation of these Terms.
• Paideia reserves the right to modify credit pricing with reasonable notice.
• Paideia may grant complimentary credits at its sole discretion. Such credits carry no monetary value and cannot be transferred or redeemed for cash.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Use the Service to process documents you do not have the right to use or distribute.
• Attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or abuse the API in ways that exceed your allocated credits or disrupt service availability.
• Share or resell API keys without prior written authorization from Paideia.
• Use the Service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable regulations.

7. Data and file handling

DOCX files submitted to the Service are processed in memory and are not permanently stored on our servers beyond the time necessary to complete the conversion. We do not retain, analyze, or share the content of submitted documents. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

8. API key and account security

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your API key. Any activity conducted using your API key is your responsibility. If you suspect unauthorized use, contact us immediately at contact@paideiahosting.net.

9. Modifications to the service

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the Service at any time, with or without notice. We will make reasonable efforts to notify active users of material changes. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the new terms.

10. Governing law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be resolved in the courts of Delaware.
